HIP

The hip is a ball and socket joint which gives a great deal of stability and allows it to move freely. The thigh bone fits inside a cup shaped socket in the hip bone.  It requires substantial force to pop the thigh bone from its socket.

Hip Bursitis is inflammation of the bursa that causes pain and/or swelling on the outside of the upper thigh. The bursa is a fluid filled sac that sits between a bone and a tendon in the hip that allows smooth motion.  Hip bursitis is commonly seen in runners, injuries such as a fall on the upper thigh, or on patients who have undergone hip surgery.

Hip Fracture (Broken Hip) is a common injury especially in the elderly. This type of fracture requires hospitalization and most of the time surgery.  In the elderly the most common cause of a broken hip is a fall because their bones are thinner.  In younger patient the most common cause of a broken hip is a car accident.

Hip Dislocation occurs when the thigh bone pops out of its socket. The most common cause is a car accident, but wearing a seatbelt can reduce the risk. This is very painful and initially the patient will be unable to move their leg. The bones can be manipulated back into place most of the time.

Hip Osteonecrosis
is a problem with the normal blood supply of the hip causes a decrease in the supply of oxygen and nutrients causing the bone to die. This can be caused by trauma to the hip such as a fracture or dislocation. This can cause problems.

Temporomandibular Syndrome (TMJ) is a condition in which a person feels pain and discomfort in the muscles that connect the lower jaw bone to the skull. The most common cause is tension in the muscles that control the jaw, such as from clenching the jaw or grinding the teeth. The common symptoms of TMJ are pain when chewing, yawning, or opening the mouth and a clicking or popping sound when opening the jaw.
